Video: Rescuers suspend search for missing diver off Catalina Island

Rescuers searched unsuccessfully for about four hours Tuesday off Catalina Island for a missing 28-year-old female scuba diver who vanished about noon, lifeguards and sheriff’s deputies said. About 15 divers looked for the woman at Ship Rock, located off of the Isthmus, when she disappeared from her group about noon, Lifeguard Section Chief Terry Yamamoto said. The rescuers included divers from the Sheriff’s Department and county lifeguards. Rescuers searched until dark, and planned to resume Wednesday morning, deputies said. Yamamoto said the area has strong currents and there is a deep drop-off.
